Sugimoto Genkaku Sadamitsu

Born in Tokyo in 1935. In 1968, Sugimoto built an anagama kiln in the mountains of Shigaraki and began making pottery. In 1974, he became a disciple of the Zen priest Tachibana Daiki of Daitokuji Temple. Following his teacher’s instruction to “return to Momoyama,” he devoted himself to the study and production of tea ceramics.

His work draws on a wide range of historical ceramics, including old Shigaraki and Iga wares, Raku tea bowls by Chōjirō and Kōetsu, Shino, Oribe, Ido tea bowls, and Korean ceramics.

In 2014, he received the Buddhist name Genkaku Sadamitsu from Kobori Taigan, head priest of the Kenninji branch of the Rinzai school.
