Q Tani — Baumkuchen-shaped Futaoki
Q Tani — Baumkuchen-shaped Futaoki
Futaoki by Shigaraki ceramic artist Q Tani.
In recent years, Q Tani has been developing a series called “Oyatsu” (“Snacks”), and this piece is one of them.
A white slip is applied over a cream-beige clay body, while several concentric throwing lines evoke the layered rings of a Baumkuchen cake. The rings on the upper side—the surface on which the kettle lid rests—are finer than those on the underside. The soft lines give it the gentle quality of a confection, yet the treatment never becomes overly sweet. In the tea room, it brings a playful note without losing dignity, and possesses enough depth to stand on its own as an object of appreciation.
It is also a delightful palm-sized piece simply to display as an object.
