Shintaro Uchimura: Oku-Gourai Tea Bowl
Shintaro Uchimura: Oku-Gourai Tea Bowl
An Oku-Gorai tea bowl by Shintaro Uchimura, a ceramic artist whose work focuses on Korean ceramics and tea wares.
Oku-Gorai refers to tea bowls produced in Karatsu during the Momoyama period (late 16th to early 17th century), modeled after Korean tea bowls such as those of the Komogai type.
The form is a classic example of the Komogai style. From the vertical walls of the foot ring, the profile passes through a gently trimmed area around the foot, then rises at a steeper angle before turning slightly outward at the rim.
Despite its substantial appearance, the bowl feels light in the hand, partly due to its relatively thin walls. The foot ring has a crescent-shaped profile and a small central projection (tokin). The foot and part of the surrounding trimmed area are left unglazed, revealing the character of the clay.
