Collection: Nobufumi Myoga

He became independent in 1948 and set up kilns in Karatsu and Genkaicho.

Because he is fascinated by Karatsu clay, he uses traditional methods, doing everything himself, from finding the clay to making the glaze. However, he is not particular about copying the orthodox old Karatsu style. When it comes to Karatsu, it has become common to use sandstone (nowadays), but Myoga does not stick to that.

He goes out to find raw materials with his own two feet, trusts his own eyes, and pursues his ideal Karatsu. This actually involves going into the mountains to look for soil, testing whether the soil he collects is usable, making test pieces for various glaze mixtures, and turning a lot on the potter's wheel. It is only by accumulating these experiences that Myoga is able to move forward powerfully, with his feet firmly on the ground.
