Collection: Yukie Wakabayashi
Wakabayashi Yukie is a lacquerware artist who has a studio in Kawagoe.
Wakabayashi's works offer a perspective on another history of lacquer that has continued since the Jomon period, and which is neither of continental (Buddhist) origin nor of samurai origin. It is precisely because Wakabayashi perceives lacquer on a vast timescale that a robustness resides not only in his hand-carved pieces but also in his turned pieces.
Lacquer is a miraculous material created by the relationship between humans and nature. Lacquer art transcends specific cultural frameworks and is reinterpreted as the relationship between humans and the blessings of nature.
Wakabayashi's lacquerware is full of wild elegance.
