Collection: Masami Kawabata

Masami Kawabata is a potter living in the Hasami area. He is an up-and-coming artist who has yet to establish his career. Although he does not yet have his own kiln, he has a great sense and talent that makes his future work very exciting.

What I fell in love with was the beautiful glaze and the shape.

"I would like to create a subtle beauty. Something that is naturally modest and not too assertive. But even within that, I am careful to create some impressive parts or a sense of tension somewhere." As she says, the pieces are very delicate and ephemeral, yet they also have a dignified dignity and healthiness.

The detailed painting is meticulous, and the pieces have a rustic, elegant, and refined feel, like antiques. While taking inspiration from ancient pottery, the pieces are edited and reconstructed as modern paintings that are not simply copies, by "extracting patterns found in old objects" and "combining or creating simpler designs."

Kawabata is fond of old Imari ware, particularly early Imari ware. "I am attracted to the atmosphere of things that are close to the beginning of porcelain, during the period when Karatsu ware was being replaced by Arita white porcelain," he says. "I capture the ambiguity and gray area of old things between Karatsu and early Imari ware and express it in white porcelain. It is in this gap between things that cannot be named that Kawabata Masami's path lies."
