A three-eared, Shinogi Sayagata patterned vase by Miyaoka Maiko, a pottery maker at Kagetsu Kiln in Ome City.
The outline extends in a smooth curve from the side of the base, then from the high, protruding body to the koshiki (the part with the raised mouth) in a somewhat straight line.
The bluish skin and slightly asymmetrical body shape give the statue the appearance of a soft-spoken lady, reminiscent of old Imari ware, and yet also human-like and appealing. The shinogi carving creates a play of light and shadow, and because it is positioned above the maximum diameter of the body, it also has the effect of guiding the eye, giving it a youthful impression and further enhancing its elegance.
The pattern on the koshiki is called Sayagata, and is a pattern of consecutive swastikas. The succession of auspicious swastikas symbolizes the prosperity of the family and longevity.
